MTD - practical problems emerge

As businesses get to grips with Making Tax Digital for VAT (MTDfV) there have been a few teething problems with HMRC’s systems. If you’ve signed up to it, or are about to, what do you need to know about these?

MTD service downtime. On a few occasions the new VAT submission process has not been fully available because the HMRC technical bods were carrying out system maintenance. This means there are times when some parts of the service can’t be used, e.g. the initial sign-up process or you may not be able to submit your return. HMRC aims to announce downtimes in advance and you can check its “service availability page” for details. Don’t leave submitting your return using MTDfV until just before the deadline in case of service problems. Allow an extra day or two.

If you submit your VAT returns monthly you might have been affected by an MTDfV glitch. There have been reports of businesses submitting returns but not appearing on HMRC’s records. If you become aware of it you should contact the software provider for a fix.

Many MTDfV problems are addressed and resolved on HMRC’s Agent Forum, which is a service that’s only open to tax advisors. So, if you’re having problems with MTDfV which you can’t resolve, give your accountant a call as they may be able to find a solution on the forum.
